Where did the number of organic farms increase?

In 2011, the Netherlands had about 1.400 organic farms. That number rose to 2017 in 1.687. In which municipality can the largest increase be seen? A new top 5, compiled by Statistics Netherlands, provides the answer.

In 2011, there were 70.392 agricultural companies in the Netherlands. That number has fallen sharply in 6 years; in 2017 there were 54.830 agricultural companies in the Netherlands. However, the number of organic farms has increased by 287 (or 21%) farms.

Who is at the top of the list?
The list is headed by the municipality of Dronten (Flevoland). In 2011, this municipality had 449 agricultural companies. That number dropped to 2017 companies in 433. Of those 433 companies, 81 companies produce organically; in 2011, this was still 53 companies. This means that this municipality shows an increase of 28 companies, or 53%.

The silver medal is for the municipality of Barneveld (Gelderland). In 2011, there were 675 agricultural companies in this municipality, in 2017 that number decreased to 550 companies (-22,7%). However, the number of organic farms did show a significant increase. In 2011, the municipality of Barneveld had 38 organic companies. In 2017, that number increased to 63. This means that the municipality shows an increase of 25 organic companies, which is equal to an increase of 66%. 

The municipality of Ede (Gelderland) comes in third place. In 2011, this municipality had 894 agricultural companies. That number dropped to 2017 companies in 700. Here too, the number of organic farms shows a sharp increase; from 41 in 2011 to 64 in 2017. That is an increase of 23 companies, which amounts to 56%.

Just next to the stage
The municipality of Noordoostpolder (Flevoland) ends up just next to the podium. In 2011, there were 937 agricultural companies in this municipality, which decreased to 2017 in 843. The number of organic farms has increased by 17 farms; from 42 in 2011 to 59 in 2017. That is an increase of 40%.

In fifth and last place of this top 5 is the municipality of West Maas en Waal (Gelderland). In 2011, there were 233 agricultural companies in this municipality. That number has dropped quite a bit in 6 years; to 182. The number of organic farms rose considerably here; from 5 in 2011 to 16 in 2017. That is an increase of no less than 220%.

What stands out?
The municipality of Neerijnen (Gelderland) shows a significant decrease in the number of organic farms. In 2011, there were still 8 organic companies in this municipality. However, in 2017 that number dropped to 2 companies. This is a 75% decrease.

The municipality of Haaren (North Brabant) also shows a significant decrease in the number of organic farms. In 2011, this municipality still had 223 agricultural companies, which decreased to 2017 in 163. The number of organic farms decreased from 10 to 5, a decrease of 50%. 

The municipality of Oude IJsselstreek (Gelderland) also shows a decrease of 5 companies. The impact here is however greater (-63%). This is because the total number of agricultural companies has fallen more sharply; from 414 in 2011 to 323 in 2017. The number of organic farms decreased from 8 in 2011 to 3 in 2017.
