In the past year 8.104 companies were counted in the Netherlands that grow sugar beet. This brings the sugar beet acreage in 2017 to 85.347 hectares. But in which municipality is sugar beet cultivation the most popular? A new top 5, compiled by Statistics Netherlands, provides the answer.
From one previous top 5 shows that the municipality of Raalte (Overijssel) grew on average the most sugar beet in 2016. This municipality came to an average of 28 hectares, spread over 11 companies. Those 11 companies are not enough to finish in this top 5 at the top. But where do we find most companies that grow sugar beets?
Which municipality is at the top?
The list is headed by the municipality of Noordoostpolder (Flevoland). This place had 2017 companies growing sugar beets in 489. In total, this concerns 4.062 hectares, which means an average of 8,3 hectares per company.
The number 1 is head and shoulders above the number 2. In second place is the municipality of Sluis (Zeeland) with 273 sugar beet growing companies. In total, sugar beet is grown on 2.353 hectares in Sluis. That makes an average of 8,6 hectares per company, slightly more than with the number 1.
In third place is the municipality of Dronten (Flevoland). In 2017, 240 companies growing sugar beet were counted in this municipality. In total, this concerns 2.881 hectares of sugar beet. This equates to 12 hectares per farm. That is a lot higher than with numbers 1 and 2.
In fourth place comes the municipality of Hollands Kroon (North Holland). In 2017, 234 companies were counted in this municipality that grow sugar beet. That amounts to a total of 2.803 hectares. The average per company here is also 12 hectares.
The municipality of Terneuzen (Zeeland) is in fifth place. In 2017, 198 companies were registered in Terneuzen that grow sugar beet. In total, this concerns 1.705 hectares. The average per company in this municipality is lower again, at 8,6 hectares.

Most hectares
If we look at the municipalities with the most hectares, there are a number of differences in the top 5. The Noordoostpolder is again in first place. This municipality covers 4.062 hectares. In second place comes the municipality of Borger-Odoorn (Drenthe). In this municipality there are 158 companies that grow sugar beet. In total this concerns 3.380 hectares, which brings an average of 21,4 hectares per company.
In third place is the municipality of Emmen (Drenthe). In 2017, about 151 companies were counted in this municipality that grow sugar beet. In total, this concerns 3.160 hectares. That brings an average of 20,9 hectares per farm. The municipality of Dronten (2.881 hectares) is in fourth place and the municipality of Hollands Kroon (2.803 hectares) is in fifth place.
Average per hectare
Then there is another option to compare, namely the average number of hectares per company. Previously came out of this showed that the municipality of Raalte had the highest averages. In 2017, the municipality of Pekela (Groningen) is at the top. In this municipality 34 companies were counted that grow sugar beet. However, the number of hectares in this municipality is 768 hectares. That means an average of 22,6 hectares per farm.

In second place is the municipality of Borger-Odoorn. This municipality also featured in the previous top 5. The average per company in this municipality is 21,4 hectares. In third place is the municipality of Emmen. This municipality also came to the fore in the previous top 5. The average here is 20,9 hectares.
In fourth place is the municipality of Tynaarlo (Drenthe). In 2017, 23 companies growing sugar beet were counted in this municipality. In total, this concerns 444 hectares, which means an average of 19,3 hectares per company. The municipality of Het Bildt (Friesland) is in fifth place. In 2017, 40 companies growing sugar beet were registered in this municipality. In total this concerns 757 hectares, which means an average of 18,9 hectares per company.
The municipality of Raalte has fallen to place 55 in a relatively short period. In 2017, 13 companies growing sugar beet were registered in this municipality. The total acreage amounted to 136 hectares, which means an average of 10,5. Last year, that average was 28 hectares per farm.
