3 February 2018 - Kimberly Bakker - 2 comments

The Netherlands had more than 2017 million pigs in 12, according to figures from Statistics Netherlands. But in which province is the number of pigs highest? A new top 5, compiled by CBS, provides the answer.

The exact number of pigs in 2017 was 12.409.460 pigs. That number was higher in 2016, at 12.478.594 pigs. However, in which province can the most pigs be found?

Top 5
The province of North Brabant is at the top of the list. More than 2017 million pigs were registered in this province in 6 (6.007.632 heads). This puts this province head and shoulders above the rest. In 2016, this number amounted to 5.950.727 units. This means that around 2016 pigs were added between 2017 and 60.000.

The difference between the number 1 and 2 is no less than 4 million pigs. The province of Limburg is in second place. Exactly 2017 pigs were registered in this province in 1.905.109. In Limburg, the number of pigs in 2016 amounted to 1.937.689 pigs, slightly more than in 2017.

The bronze medal is for the province of Gelderland. This province is just below number 2 and recorded 2017 pigs in 1.897.007. This is a difference of approximately 8.000 pigs. This province still had 2016 pigs in 1.923.940, which means that the number of pigs has decreased in the past year.

next to the stage
The province of Overijssel is just next to the podium. In 2017, 1.578.897 pigs were registered in this province (result of the Agricultural Census). A difference of more than 200.000 pigs compared to the province of Gelderland. In 2016, the number of pigs in Overijssel was higher, namely 1.627.010 pigs.

The fifth, and also last, place is for the province of Utrecht. This province shows a huge difference with the top 4. In 2017, 268.709 pigs were registered in this province. That is a difference of more than 1 million pigs with the number 4. Compared with the number 1, the difference is quite large (5.738.923 pigs).

Who's at the bottom?
At the bottom of the list is the province of North Holland. Only 2017 pigs were counted in this province in 23.525. In 2016, this number was 22.102 units, which is slightly lower. Just above that is the province of Flevoland. In 2017, 48.434 pigs were counted in this province. That was 2016 pigs in 52.980, slightly more than in the previous year.

Written in 3 minutes. In the second paragraph of Top 5, a difference of just 4 million is already made almost 5 million. The last line of this paragraph is completely crooked than crooked, 2016 is compared to 2016 and less is more. Overijssel had a "slightly higher" pig herd with 2016 pigs in 50.000, and Gelderland experienced a "significant decrease" with 27.000 fewer pigs. Only a link to the CBS would have taken only 1 minute and provided more clarity.
