Which province has the most pig farms?

In 2017, there were 4.303 pig farms in the Netherlands. But in which province do we find the most pig farms? That gives a new top 5 of Boerenbusiness answer to.

From one previous top 5 As it turned out, the Netherlands had more than 2017 million pigs in 12. Most pigs were found in the province of North Brabant. Does this also apply to most pig farms?

Who is on top?
The province of Noord-Brabant is indeed at the top of the list. In this province 2017 pig farms were counted in 1.574, with a total of 6.007.632 pigs† In 2016, this number was still 1.632 pig farms. 

The province of Gelderland is in second place. In this province, 2017 pig farms were registered in 1.007. In 2016, that number was still at 1.062 pig farms. This province came in third place in the top 5 for most pigs (1.897.007 pigs).

The bronze medal is for the province of Overijssel. In 2017, 695 pig farms were counted in this province. In 2016, that number still stood at 726. This province knew in the previous top 5 (number of pigs) not to finish on the podium. With a total of 1.578.897 pigs, Overijssel finished in fourth place in that top 5.

Just next to the boat
The province of Limburg is in fourth place. In 2017, 429 pig farms were registered in this province. In 2016 there were 448. In the top 5 of most pigs, this province came in second with almost 2 million pigs. This also means that the share of large-scale pig farms is higher here.

The fifth, and last place of this top 5 is for the province of Utrecht. A total of 2017 pig farms were registered in this province in 193. In 2016, that number was still at 203 pig farms. 

Who's at the bottom?
At the bottom of the list is the province of Flevoland. In 2017, 29 pig farms were registered in this province. In 2016 that number was 30. Flevoland was also one of the provinces with relatively few pigs. With almost 50.000 pigs, this province was in eleventh place.

North Holland is just above the province of Flevoland. This province was at the bottom of our other top 5. The province has therefore risen 1 spot in this top. In 2017, the number of pig farms in North Holland amounted to 31 farms. In 2016, there were still 37 pig farms.
