Where did onion cultivation grow in popularity?

In 2011, onions were grown on 29.842 hectares in the Netherlands. That number increased to 2017 hectares in 34.912. But where has onion cultivation become more and more popular? A new top 5, compiled by Statistics Netherlands, provides the answer.

The above shows a plus of 5.070 hectares, or a percentage increase of 17%. But where has the onion acreage increased the most in the past 6 years?

Where has the onion area increased?
The top 5 is headed by the municipality of Terneuzen (Zeeland). In 2011, onions were grown on 1.140 hectares in this municipality. In 2017, that number increased to 1.480 hectares, an increase of 340 hectares. That equates to a percentage increase of 29,8%.

In second place is the municipality of Noordoostpolder (Flevoland). In 2011, onions were grown on 4.266 hectares in this municipality. That number increased to 2017 hectares in 4.585, an increase from 319 hectares. In percentage terms, the increase is considerably lower, at 7,5%.

The bronze medal in this top 5 is for the municipality of Emmen (Drenthe). In 2011, this municipality grew onions on 19 hectares. That number increased to 2017 hectares in 317, an increase of no less than 298 hectares. However, in percentage terms the increase is even more impressive: +1.609,8%.

In fourth place is the municipality of Goeree-Overflakkee (South Holland). In 2011, onions were grown on 1.314 hectares in this municipality. That number has increased to 6 hectares in 1.547 years. That means an increase of 233 hectares, or an increase of 17,7%.

In fifth place is the municipality of Eemsmond (Groningen). In 2011, onions were grown on 343 hectares in this municipality. That increased to 2017 hectares in 571. That means an increase of 229 hectares. In percentage terms, this amounts to an increase of 66,7%.

Where have the onion-growing companies increased?
The number of onion-growing companies in 2011 stood at 3.566 companies. That number has increased to 6 companies in 4.010 years, an increase from 444 companies. But where has the number of onion-growing companies increased the most?

At the top of this list is the municipality of Sluis (Zeeland). In 2011, onions were grown on 181 companies in this municipality. That number increased to 2017 companies in 214, an increase from 33 companies. That equates to a percentage increase of 18,2%. In second place is the municipality of Borsele (Zeeland). In 2011, onions were grown on 95 companies in this municipality. That number has increased in 6 years to 124 companies in 2017. This is an increase of 29 companies, or 30,5%.

Third place is for the municipality of Terneuzen (Zeeland). This municipality was also at the top of the top 5 above. The municipality had the largest acreage of onions. The number of companies in 2011 amounted to 124 companies. In 6 years, that number has increased to 148 companies, an increase of 24 companies. As a percentage, it comes down to an increase of 19,4%.

The fourth place is for the municipality of Emmen (Drenthe). In 2011, 2 onion-growing companies were registered in this municipality. That number has increased by 6% (+800 companies) in 16 years to 18 companies. The fifth place is for the municipality of Midden-Drenthe (Drenthe). In 2011, onions were grown on 8 companies in this municipality. That number has increased to 6 companies in 24 years, an increase of 16 companies (+200%).

Who showed declines?
The municipality of Zeewolde (Flevoland) actually showed a sharp decline in onion acreage. In 2011, onions were still being grown on 1.861 hectares in the municipality. That number has fallen to 6 hectares in 1.674 years, a decrease of 187 companies. However, in percentage terms it is only a 10% decrease.

The municipality of Beemster (North Holland) shows a sharp percentage decrease. In this municipality, the onion area fell from 109 hectares in 2011 to 58 hectares in 2017. That is a decrease of 51 hectares, but in percentage terms it is a decrease of 46,4%.

The largest absolute decrease is visible in the Noordoostpolder (Flevoland). The number of onion-growing companies in 2011 amounted to 572. That number has decreased to 6 companies in 536 years. In percentage terms this is only a decrease of 6,3%, but in absolute cases it is a decrease of 36 companies.

The largest percentage decrease goes to the municipality of Vlissingen (Zeeland). In 2011, onions were still being grown on 13 companies in this municipality. That number dropped to 2017 companies in 10. In absolute numbers only a decrease of 3 companies, but in percentage terms it is a decrease of 23,1%.
