In which month were the most pigs slaughtered?

The number of pig slaughters in the Netherlands in 2017 amounted to 15,1 million pigs. In total, it concerned a weight of 1,4 billion kilos, which means an average of 95,9 kilos. But in which month were the most pigs slaughtered? Statistics from Statistics Netherlands provide the answer.

The number of pig slaughter in the Netherlands in 2016 was still 15,4 million. It is striking that the weight was also 1,4 billion kilos (an average of 94,5 kilos per pig), which means that the pigs gained weight in 2017.

What was it like in 2017?
May is at the top of the list. In that month, 1,39 million pigs slaughtered† The total slaughter weight was 133,8 million kilos, which means an average of 96,4 kilos per pig. In 2016, the number of slaughters in May amounted to 1,25 million pigs. In total, this involved a weight of 118,1 million kilos, which comes down to an average of 94,6 kilos per pig.

The second place is for March. In that month, the number of pig slaughters amounted to 1,36 million. In total, this concerns a weight of 131,2 million kilos, which means that the average weight per pig is 96,1 kilos. In 2016, the number of pigs slaughtered in March amounted to 1,42 million pigs. They had a total weight of 135,1 million kilos, which is an average weight of 95 kilos per pig.

The lowest rung of the podium is for November (1,35 million slaughters). The total slaughter weight was 130,8 million kilos, which means an average of 96,6 kilos per pig. In 2016, this month was in fourth place, with the number of slaughters reaching 1,31 million. The total slaughter weight in November 2016 was 123,9 million kilos, which is an average weight of 95 kilos per pig.

In fourth place is January; then 1,35 million pigs were slaughtered. The total slaughter weight was 128,3 million kilos, bringing the average per pig to 95,1 kilos. In 2016, January was in ninth place, with 1,21 million slaughters. The total slaughter weight that year was 115,2 million kilos, which means that the average weight per pig is 95,3 kilos.

August is in fifth place. In that month it came number of slaughters amounted to 1,33 million, whereby the total slaughter weight came to 127,2 million kilos. It means that the average weight per pig was 95,6 kilos. In 2016, this month also ranked fifth (1,30 million slaughters). The total slaughter weight that month was 122,2 million kilos, which means an average of 93,7 kilos per pig.

Previous years
In 1995 the number of slaughters stood at 18,61 million. The slaughter weight was 1,6 billion kilos. The best month was March (1,74 million slaughters). The total slaughter weight in that month was 152,8 million kilos. The second best month was October. In that month came the number of slaughters at 1,63 million, with a slaughter weight of 142,4 million kilos. The third place is for May, when 1,6 million pigs were slaughtered. The slaughter weight in that month was 140,4 million kilos.

In 2000, the number of slaughters amounted to 18,56 million, with a slaughter weight of 1,6 billion kilos. The best month was March, when 1,65 million pigs were slaughtered. The total slaughter weight was 145,1 million kilos. The second place is for May (1,65 million slaughters). The slaughter weight in that month was 144 million kilos. Third place is for November. In that month, 1,64 million pigs were slaughtered, with a total weight of 144 million kilos.

The third best month was August (1,24 million slaughters). The slaughter weight in that month was 111,3 million kilos.

The number of slaughters in 2010 amounted to 13,94 million, with the slaughter weight resulting in 1,3 billion kilos. The best month was March, when 1,3 million pigs were slaughtered. The slaughter weight in that month was 121 million kilos. The second best month was November (1,25 million slaughters). The slaughter weight was 115,4 million kilos. Third place is for December. In that month, 1,22 million pigs were slaughtered, with a total slaughter weight of 111,9 million kilos.

In 2015, the number of pig slaughters amounted to 14,49 million, with a total slaughter weight of 1,5 billion kilos. The best month was November. In that month, the number of slaughters amounted to 1,48 million, with a weight of 139,2 million kilos. The second place is for September (1,38 million pigs slaughtered). The slaughter weight in that month was 129,4 million kilos. The fifth place is for October (1,37 million pig slaughters). The slaughter weight in that month was 129,4 million kilos.
