U.S. pork exports showed excellent numbers in 2016, say the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the United States Federation of Exports (USMEF). Exports showed an increase of 2016 percent in 8 compared to the previous year.
With an export of 2,31 million tons of pork, the volume was two percent higher than the record in 2012. The value of exports rose by seven percent in a year in 2016 to an amount of 5,94 billion dollars. Export figures rose sharply, especially in December. In the last month of the year, exports rose by 18 percent compared to a year earlier and the value rose by twenty percent. The United States exported nearly 26 percent of the total volume of pork last year.
Mexico in particular was an important buyer of American pork. In the second half of the year, exports rose to record highs five times in a row, reaching an increase of seven percent at the end of the year compared to the previous year. China also continued to be a major player in 2016, despite the figures declining slightly from earlier in the year, up 40 percent in December compared to 2015.
