Recent data from the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) shows that British retailers are increasingly importing bacon from abroad. That is very disappointing, according to the National Pig Association (NPA), because it means British entrepreneurs have to continue to lower their prices.
The survey shows that 11 percent less British bacon is sold in the ten largest supermarket chains compared to last year. 'There are supermarkets that choose to sell as much British meat as possible. It's just too few," said Zoë Davies, president of the NPA. About four out of five packs of bacon in English supermarket chains are imported from abroad.
A study by Kantar Worldpanel also shows that pork sales have fallen by three percent compared to last year. Most meats have fallen by one percent. However, the marinades show an extreme decrease of no less than 29 percent.
Sales did not fall for all pig products. The sale of bacon increased by four percent compared to last year. The sale of processed meat, such as sausages, also increased by more than three percent compared to last year.
In contrast to pork, the sale of beef and chicken meat has increased. Both are up just over three percent from last year. Lamb, on the other hand, has fallen by nine percent.
