During the winter months, the European pig market was unable to make any price gains. At the end of February, the German pig price was about the same level as in mid-November last year. The profit made in the run-up to Christmas had to be written off immediately afterwards. Now that spring is on the way, a new period is approaching.
The reason why the pig market in Europe has mainly started an upward trend is a combination of several factors. Since the beginning of March, slaughterhouses have reported a slight improvement on the meat market, although the emphasis is on the adjective. It is mainly the tight pig supply that forces slaughterhouses to adjust the quotations. It is expected that pig prices in Europe will continue to trend upwards in the coming weeks if there remains persistent shortages. Given the increase of one cent that the internet exchange posted on Tuesday to 1,61 euros, it is expected that the German pork price will increase again on Wednesday afternoon.
