Once again, Vion closes the doors of a slaughter location in Germany. Employees at the Zeven location, in the state of Lower Saxony, were told on Thursday that production will be discontinued due to efficiency measures. The region can no longer cover costs, the location in Zeven has been making a loss for about four years, says Vion.
This is reported by the Financieel Dagblad. Some of the slaughter in Zeven is collected at other locations, including in Emstek and Perleberg. A spokesperson for Vion reports that these locations do have the necessary papers to serve the Asian market, including China. The location in Emstek will therefore expand the capacity with 10.000 pigs to 80.000 slaughters per week.
In the past three years, Vion has already closed three slaughter locations in Germany. Slaughter locations are also closed in the Netherlands. Vion does not want to announce whether more slaughter locations will close. While some slaughter locations will close, others will be adapted and modernised. This is how the location gets in Apeldoorn an upgrade for tens of millions, while the slaughterhouse in Groenlo has recently been adapted for the processing of concept meat.
