Protesters report

Controversial slaughterhouse will remain closed for the time being

4 April 2017 - Wouter Baan

For the time being, no pigs are being slaughtered in the Flemish slaughterhouse. The slaughterhouse was closed 2 weeks ago by the Flemish Minister of Animal Welfare. That was the result of the release of images with horrific scenes.

The management of the Flemish slaughterhouse carded this decision to the Council of State. That has not yielded any results yet. At least not yet.

Key for the reopening is at the Flemish slaughterhouse

No clear answer yet
According to the Council of State, the slaughterhouse has not yet given a clear answer to the abuses, which have been determined by an independent inspection. The judicial authority subsequently ruled that the slaughterhouse must remain closed for the time being.

The key to the reopening is, however, in the hands of the Flemish slaughterhouse. If management can still refute an acceptable action plan, slaughter activities may be resumed. The case will continue to be heard in 2 weeks.

Demonstrations
There are still plenty of demonstrations around the slaughterhouse. On Monday, a group of about 500 demonstrators, including animal activists and local residents, expressed their dissatisfaction with the state of affairs within the slaughterhouse. The demonstrators demand a permanent closure of the slaughterhouse. Or they wanted a guarantee that animals would no longer be mistreated.

On Friday, Animal Rights announced that a petition to permanently close the slaughterhouse has generated approximately 157.000 signatures from the Netherlands and Belgium.
