Delivery time for piglets can easily take up to five weeks

10 April 2017 - Wouter Baan

In Germany, the piglet market is not yet out of reach, and prices are also rising at a steady pace in other European countries. Rising pig prices are fueling the hunger for piglets. The DCA BestPigletPrice has not yet reached its maximum in the Netherlands either.

The piglet price in Europe is on average 57,30 euros per piglet, week 13. That is more than 43 percent above the average that was on the boards in that week last year. Compared to the long-term average, the price in 2017 is almost 20 percent ahead of other years.

Germany continues to rise steadily
Based on the long-term average, the piglet price should be at its top in week 14, see graph. However, the North/West committee has reportedly announced another increase for week 15. It is true that the tone is slightly more moderate than in previous weeks. This is due to the fact that the trend report is now between 0 and 1 euro. It does mean that the German piglet price still has a tendency to rise.

Due to the imbalance between supply and demand, further price increases are more than realistic. In Germany, the delivery time for an average batch of piglets is still about 4 to 6 weeks. When supply increases quickly, this imbalance can quickly be reversed. The past has proven that.

However, that is not the case for the time being. Based on the five-year average of Spain, the piglet price even increased a notch in the past week, week 14, compared to previous weeks. The price rose, on balance, by 1,5 euros to 56,00 euros for a 20 kilo piglet.

Vion pig price: plus 0,03 euros

Pig price Vion up
Following the DCA Stock Exchange Price 2.0, the pork price of Vion slaughterhouse also increased by 3 cents to 1,76 euros per kilo. Even though supply and demand on the pig market are more in balance than in previous weeks, pricing can still benefit from a good meat market, thanks to Easter. After Easter it will become clear how the meat market will move in the further course of April. The tone is expected to be slightly more moderate. There are no signals that indicate a major correction.

DCA BestPigletPrice almost in the 60s
For week 15, the DCA BestPigletPrice amounts to 59 euros per piglet. This is an increase of one euro. The limit of 60 euros per piglet has almost been reached.
