Good Friday visible in German slaughter figure

21 April 2017 - Wouter Baan

The slaughter figures in the Netherlands show a fairly consistent picture every week. The weights also move in parallel, but deviate from the norm. In Germany, the effect of Good Friday is clearly visible.

In the Netherlands last week, week 15, 292.000 pigs were hanging on the slaughter hooks with an average weight of 96,32 kilos. This means that the weight sets another record. The five-year average for week 15 records a weight of 94,73 kilos. In terms of numbers, the slaughter figures are about 3,3 percent below last year's level. The slaughter figures therefore confirm tightness on the market.

Good Friday has an impact

Back in pace
In Germany, the slaughterhouses slowed down last week. With 892.161 slaughters, more was slaughtered than last year in the week of Good Friday. Pigs hanging on hooks in Germany weigh proportionately less than the Dutch ones. At 97,45 kilos, the weights are quite similar to the past.

French slaughterhouses processed 365.402 pigs. That is a plus of 3 percent compared to the previous week. Nevertheless, the slaughter figure remains far below the 2016 level. The percentage difference with the same week last year is 4,3 percent. This is more than 16.000 pigs in exact numbers. It is therefore not surprising that French media talk about extreme shortages.
