The demand for piglets is still good, only slightly less extreme than it was a few weeks ago. On their own, the piglets are downright expensive. In addition, the pig market has to move through a somewhat 'tough' period.
For the first time since the end of February, the German piglet price is on hold. On Monday, April 24, it was announced that the price for week 16 will remain at 62,50 euros per piglet. This follows the trend report that was announced last week. In the previous weeks the price was still increased, despite the fact that the trend report predicted sideways. For this week, week 17, the trend report again predicts no change.
Market tends towards balance
The supply/demand ratio on the piglet market is showing increasing signs of balance. On the one hand, more supply is available, which is in line with the seasonal development. On the other hand, demand is weakening slightly. This is because the pig market is experiencing delays these weeks. The Netherlands celebrates King's Day on Thursday, which means there is no slaughter. A few days later, Monday May 1, the Germans celebrate Labor Day. Then the German slaughterhouses will also come to a standstill.
This means that the pig market is going through a somewhat tough period in weeks 17 and 18. Less slaughter capacity means that the pigs are sometimes passed on. Price commotion is therefore not to be expected.
If the stables are not yet empty, new storage is of course not an option. Traders report this week that more piglets are available. This also means there is less pressure on the free market. The distant demand from Italy and Spain is also somewhat reserved. The undertone of the question is still good, but the extreme urge to impose is weakening somewhat. That is why the DCA BestPigletPrice remains unchanged for the second week in a row at 59 euros per piglet.
Pig price Vion
Vion also reports that the supply is increasing due to King's Day. That is why the pig price remains at 1,76 euros. At the meat market, the necks sell well, unlike the ribs. They are a little more difficult to find sales.
