Pig price in Italy breaks the 2 euro limit

25 April 2017 - Wouter Baan

The European pig market has taken a steep path in the run-up to Easter, but that road is now leveling off. All pig prices are moving more or less sideways in week 17. After the decimal point, the Italian pig price goes up slightly. This is enough to break through the 2 euro barrier.

In the ISN price comparison, Spain still leads the way among the 5 largest pig countries in Europe. The Spanish pig price is 1,79 euros, followed by France with 1,74 euros. Germany comes third with a price of 1,67 euros, the Netherlands fourth with 1,64 euros and Denmark closes the line with 1,63 euros.

It is striking that the Italian pork price, due to a zero rounding difference, suddenly rises just above 2 euros per kilo. This is not unique, by the way. Last September, the Italian pork price was also above 2 euros for 2 weeks. The previous time dates back to 2013.

Despite a slight correction, a profit of 3 cents

Internet stock market corrects slightly
The trend in the market is entirely positive. Despite the cold temperatures, pork prices are holding up easily. This is mainly due to good demand outside the European Union. The meat market is also positive in Europe. Despite the good undertone, there is probably no room for an increase tomorrow afternoon, April 26, in Germany.

No rush
German slaughterhouses are not in a hurry, because there will be no slaughter next Monday, May 1. In addition, extra Dutch pigs will arrive on the German market this week, because of King's Day. Traders report that sales to Germany are somewhat less smooth.

That the undertone is good was confirmed this afternoon at the Internet fair. The unexpected 4 cent gain on Friday, April 21, saw a slight correction of one cent to 1,81 euros. In a market like this (loss of slaughter days coming up), the indicator shows a positive trend.
