The alleged "bankruptcy" of Slaughterhouse Hilckmann has an annoying tail. The court announced on Wednesday 3 May that the slaughterhouse must pay compensation that can amount to millions of euros.
The municipality of Nijmegen paid the slaughterhouse in 2015 an advance of no less than 21 million euros to make the relocation possible. However, that move never materialized, because the family pulled the plug on the company in early 2016. The municipality now wants its money back and is demanding compensation. It is not known exactly how much money Hilckmann has to pay. In any case, it can amount to several million euros.
Hilckmann believes that market conditions forced them to stop the slaughterhouse. However, the court ruled that this falls under business risk.
