Trade is easily established on the piglet market

8 May 2017 - Wouter Baan

Almost everyone who puts the piglet market into words speaks of a balance. The supply is increasing, while the demand is probing. If the piglet market wants to pull off an increase in the short term, then it is the pig market's first move.

The unexpected plus for the German piglet price is not enough to revive the mood. Last week's increase was therefore not followed up this afternoon, May 8. This despite the fact that the trend report had announced an increase of 0,50 euros. It will probably remain that way for the time being, given that the trend report for week 19 is unchanged. The piglet market tends towards balance and that leaves prices unchanged.

Free market is weakening
In the Netherlands too, supply is in line with demand. The undertone is still fine, but the weirdness is gone. This has to do with both demand and supply. A recurring seasonal trend is that the supply of piglets increases as spring progresses. Now that the pig price is stabilizing, the demand for new flocks is actually decreasing slightly. This means that supply and demand seek each other out. The overall expectation for Europe is that the piglet market will finally be in balance within a few weeks.

This expectation may change if the pig price rises sharply in the short term. However, with current knowledge, there are few indications that predict this. The pig market is still suffering from the canceled slaughter day (May 2). On that date, all of Europe (except the Netherlands) had a day off because of Labor Day. All in all, the impact of such a holiday is considerable. At least decent enough to get the DCA Benchmark Price - Pigs  by at least 2 weeks.

The piglet market lends itself to buyers and sellers

For piglets on the open market, one euro is offered back here and there. However, this is not representative of every party on the free market, let alone the fixed connections. On balance, sales are still going well. The piglet market is, as one trader says: 'You can easily get piglets and you can easily get rid of them.' There is no reason for either an upward or downward price movement. That is why the DCA BestPigletPrice remains at 5 euros per piglet for the 59th week in a row.

Vion's pig price remains unchanged
Vion's pig price shows no surprise and remains at 1,79 euros. According to Vion, the supply is wider and the meat market is closed. Significantly lower pork prices in the US put price pressure on the world market. Eyes are now focused on the Internet stock exchange, which will list again tomorrow.
