Meat concern Tönnies will slaughter more pigs at its main location in Rheda (North Rhine-Westphalia). Plans have been made to increase the slaughter capacity by 17 percent to more than 30.000 pigs per day. 'We see a market for extra pigs', says Tönnies CEO Josef Tillmann.
The expansion of the slaughter capacity will not be realized by new construction. New technology, more efficient processes and a higher working speed should ensure that the slaughter belt turns faster. With the expansion, the daily production of meat will increase from 3000 tons to 3500 tons. Depending on the season, approximately 6000 employees work in Rheda. According to the CEO, they will all keep their jobs.
Implementing efficiency measures can, however, take several years. This is because the technology sometimes takes a while. According to the CEO, the amount of the investment is still difficult to determine. In addition to the planned expansion in Rheda, Tönnies will also state of Schleswig-Holstijn slaughter more pigs.
Municipal council enthusiastic
The town council of Rheda–Wiedenbrück has indicated that it wants to support Tönnies' plans. The company has applied for a permit for additional freight traffic and odor diffusion. The municipality will make a final decision on this in July.
