It can be at Danish Crown. The Danish slaughterhouse has been struggling all year to get pigs on the hook, but is now suddenly faced with a significant 'oversupply'.
Slaughterhouse workers are carrying out strike action, which means that thousands of pigs ready for slaughter cannot be slaughtered. Several Danish Crown locations in Denmark have been shut down in recent weeks due to staff strikes.
Danish Crown is therefore now looking for alternatives. This is because approximately 100.000 pigs ready for slaughter need to be slaughtered. Danish pig farmers have packed the stables now that the flow is slowed down.
Moving on to Germany
Some of the pigs can be transferred to slaughter locations in Germany. According to Søren Eriksen, board member at Danish Crown, about 10.000 pigs per week will be slaughtered in Germany for the time being, until the pig plug in Denmark is phased out. Due to the high temperatures, this alone is far from desirable. We are therefore talking about an emergency solution. It cannot be ruled out that another strike will take place in the coming weeks.
In order to keep the travel distance as short as possible, the pigs are therefore collected as much as possible from Danish producers in the border regions with Germany.
