BestPigletPrice cracks, but doesn't break

29 May 2017 - Wouter Baan

The best-before date of record high piglet prices is approaching. A seasonally wider range and broken weeks create strong price pressure. This is particularly evident in the free market.

The situation on the piglet market is more or less the same as last week. Traders report price pressure on the open market, where the supply of piglets is steadily increasing. There is increasing resistance to the record high piglet prices, which also require significant surcharges to be paid. However, the pressure on the free market is not representative of the entire market, because sales within fixed connections are significantly better.

Germany is not backing down and Spain is sinking

A seasonal increase in supply is offset by good demand. That is why the German piglet price held up quite easily in the past week. An unchanged trend report has also been announced for this week. A series of broken weeks also ensures that the offer feels broader. When Whit Monday is over, a period follows in which the agenda does not work against the market. Perhaps the pressure on the free market will then decrease somewhat.

BestPigletPrice unchanged, but foundation is cracking
For next week, the DCA BestPigletPrice will remain at 59 euros. However, it must be stated that the foundation under price is becoming increasingly fragile. The surcharges are a reason that the prices can still be maintained. According to some parties, these have risen to such an extent in the market that they now need to be tinkered with before the basic price can move. It must be stated that the market is too weak to provide the DCA BestPigletPrice with a price-containing stamp.

Unchanged, but not price-bearing

In Spain, the piglet price (20 kilos) is in the middle of a negative spiral. Last week the price fell again by 2 euros to 51 euros. As the quotations in Northwestern Europe remain unchanged, the difference is increasing. Perhaps the increasing difference can slow down the Spanish piglet price. Despite weakening demand, Spain remains dependent on imports.

Vion pig price unchanged
Vion's pig price remains unchanged at 1,82 euros. In the face of a demanding retail market in Europe, the meat industry does not allow an increase. The export of slaughterhouses is also experiencing headwinds due to a strengthening euro and fellow exporters from America who are storming the world market with large volumes. According to Vion, there is a normal supply of heavy fattening pigs.
