Fewer pigs were slaughtered in Germany in the first 4 months of this year. The counter is a few percent lower than last year. It is striking that far fewer Dutch pigs are slaughtered in Germany.
In Germany, approximately 19 million pigs were slaughtered in the period January to April. That is a minus of 3,4 percent compared to last year.
Fewer imported pigs
What is striking is that the number of pigs slaughtered from Germany has decreased by 2,4 percent. The number of pigs imported from abroad has even decreased by 15,5 percent. German slaughterhouses mainly import a lot of pigs from the Netherlands and Belgium.
Fewer pigs cross the border
This trend can also be seen in the export figures of Dutch fattening pigs to Germany. In the first 19 weeks of this year, 1.023.150 pigs crossed the German border. In the same period last year, the German import counter recorded 1.186.348 pigs from the Netherlands. On balance, this is a decline of more than 163.000 pigs.
