Deviating trend

Spanish slaughterhouses slaughter more pigs

June 14, 2017 - Wouter Baan

The number of pig slaughters is declining rapidly across Europe. However, that does not apply to Spain. Figures from the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture show that the number of pigs slaughtered in the first quarter of 2017 increased by 2,8 percent.

In the period from January to March, 12,8 million pigs were slaughtered in Spain. Compared to the same period in 2016, this is a plus of 2,8 percent. In exact numbers that is 355.000 pigs more.

Production also increased
Pork production also increased by 2,8 percent. The Spanish pig price has nothing to fear from the wider supply.

Germany goes down
In Germany, the number of slaughters has actually fallen by a few percent. Also in the Netherlands, France and Denmark the number of slaughters is lagging behind compared to previous years.
