Private demand for pork in Germany fell by 2016 percent from January to April 7,1. That is compared to the same period in the previous year. This was reported on Thursday, June 15 by the Agricultural Market Information Society (AMI).
This continues the trend of the past. The price of pork also rose by 2016 percent in the period from January to April 4,2.
Different meats, different trend
Although much less pork was bought, a different trend is clearly visible in the demand for other meats. For example, the demand for beef and poultry rose considerably. Beef was mainly bought more by weight. That was striking, because prices rose by 3,7 to 9 percent.
Demand for poultry rose by 2,9 percent. This sector has mainly benefited from the increased demand for turkey meat. In the first 4 months of the year, somewhat more meat products and sausages were also purchased.
Causes of the decline
The increasing share of out-of-home consumption has grown. However, more often poultry or beef is chosen. In addition, the preparation of pork is more complex than that of other meats. That is not appropriate for today's society.
The weather has also had an impact on consumer demand. Pork is especially popular on the barbecue. Due to long periods of cold weather, the demand for beef has increased.
