Feed track pig farming popular

June 16, 2017 - Kimberly Bakker

Many pig farmers have registered with the Flynth consultancy for the Phosphate Reduction Scheme for Pig Farming. Flynth implements the scheme on behalf of the Producers Organization Pig Farming (POV).

The voluntary feed track for pig farming has ended Monday 29 May entered into force. This scheme aims to reduce phosphate production from livestock farming by one million kilos of phosphate this year. This must be done via compound feed.

Contribute to package of measures
The reduction from pig farming must contribute to the package of measures, which aims to reduce phosphate production in the Netherlands to the level permitted for the Nitrates Directive derogation decision. 4 million euros is available for the voluntary feed track pig farming.

Signing up still makes sense
Pig farmers can still register until June 26. 'It certainly still makes sense to do this', says POV chairman Ingrid Jansen. 'After all, we do not yet know how much reduction the registered pig farmers expect in 2017. We do expect that we will have to achieve the 1 million kilos of phosphate. However, we won't know for sure until the additional information has been provided by the pig farmers.'

The pig farmers who have registered will be notified in the week of 19 June. This will include a request to provide the additional information. They then have 3 weeks to do this. If it then becomes clear that more than 1 million kilos of phosphate is being reduced, pig farmers who registered later will be placed on the "reserve bank".

They will hear in 2018 if there is still room

On the reserve bank?
Companies that are on that reserve bank will hear in 2018 whether there is still room for payment of compensation. This money is released if other companies have not achieved the reduction, or if these companies do not meet the preconditions. The pig farmers who are on the reserve bench can still make their own choice based on this whether they will reduce this year or not.

Pig farmers who register between 19 and 26 June will be informed definitively in mid-July whether they can still participate. It is then checked whether there is still room within the 1 million kilo reduction.
