Inside: Pig Market

Piglet market too fragile for unchanged

June 26, 2017 - Wouter Baan

The piglet market is falling from record levels. With the exception of the German piglet price, many quotations are in red. The question is whether the DCA should hand in BestPigletPrice again this week. Opinions differ in the market, but about what?

The situation on the piglet market is that an oversupply of free flocks increases the overall pressure. Traders notice that it is difficult to get all couples placed. That is why they are sometimes forced to stay in their own stables. There are traders who argue for lower prices. Others recognize the price pressure, but underline the importance of not losing sight of the stable piglet price in Germany. Too much distance creates imbalances in the market.

remains the piglet price in Germany

In Germany, a wider supply of piglets is reported. There are significantly more piglets in circulation, but there is still a balance between supply and demand. The German piglet price has once again remained at €63 per piglet over the past week. It is expected that this price can also be maintained this week. This was to the surprise of Dutch parties. The German piglet price has now been at the current price level for 9 weeks, which is also a record high. The German piglet price has experienced similar stable periods in the past, only often a little later in the season.

Bad Spanish question
In Spain, the piglet price fell by as much as €3 to €44 per piglet last week. A signal that the Spanish demand for piglets is completely collapsing. In the last week of May, ''only'' 2.950 Dutch piglets were exported to Spain. In the period March to mid-May, the weekly export figure varied roughly between 5.500 and 11.500 piglets. These figures confirm the significantly poorer sales opportunities to Spain, which have been reported since the end of May.

DCA BestPigletPrice down
The DCA BestPigletPrice drops this week by €0,50 to €56,50 per piglet. The spring madness on the piglet market is still included in the allowances here and there. Regardless of the base price, there is still room to decrease. However, traders are afraid to compromise on surcharges and lose multipliers. In the conditions of the BPP a maximum surcharge of 18% is charged.

Vion unchanged
Vion's pig price remains at €1,82 per kilo. The meat market is difficult, despite a tight pig supply. The hams and shoulders in particular are finding sales difficult, Vion reports.
