Producer the dupe

Westfleisch is also going to cut bears

6 July 2017 - Wouter Baan

The aversion to bear meat in German slaughterhouses continues. After Tönnies, Westfleisch is now also cutting bears. A major damper for German pig farmers in view of the impending castration ban on piglets.

Discount of 3 to 5 cents per kilo slaughter weight

The adjustments in the payout system at Westfleisch are in the same order of magnitude as at Tönnies. This means a discount of 3 to 5 cents per kilogram of slaughter weight. According to the ISN, the German representative of pig farmers, pig farmers are the victims of the changes implemented by slaughterhouses.

Now that the sales opportunities for bear meat are disappointing, the producer is being cut. This while Tönnies in the past gave rosy stories about the marketing of bear meat.

Approaching Gorge
From 1 January 2018 it is prohibited in Germany to castrate piglets without anaesthetic. That is why, according to the ISN, it is necessary that alternative measures, such as local anesthesia, are accelerated. Otherwise pig farmers will face an unbridgeable gap between market and politics next year.
