Trade agreement with Japan

JEFTA good for pig export

6 July 2017 - Wouter Baan

An agreement in principle between the EU and Japan on new trade relations (JEFTA) will be signed in Brussels today. This is good news for pork and veal exports, according to the Central Organization for the Meat Sector (COV).

Import tariff on processed pork expires

Japan is the second largest buyer of European pork after China. In 2, Japan imported nearly 2016 tons of pork. The Dutch contribution to this export volume was 400.000 tons with a trade value of more than €30.000 million. The COV expects that the competitive position of European exporters will become stronger as a result of the free trade agreement. For example, the import tariffs on processed pork will be lifted.

Veal import tariffs reduced
Since 2013, the Netherlands has also been exporting veal to Japan again. Due to the extreme import tariffs applied by Japan, the volumes are still small. The current import levy for Dutch veal will be reduced from 38,5% to 9%.
