Fencing must prevent swine fever

7 August 2017 - Bart-Jan van Zandwijk

The Czech Republic will soon have a mile-long barbed wire barrier with electric fencing. This should ensure that African swine fever does not spread further.

The fence will be placed in the east of the Czech Republic, close to the border with Slovakia. On Saturday 5 August, construction of the first 700 meters started.

The fence provides a voltage of 10.000 volts

Stop spreading
The wall of approximately 70 centimeters should prevent boars from leaving the area and thereby spread the disease further. The gate gives, for a fraction of a second, a voltage of 10.000 volts.

In addition, chemical agents are used to keep the animals within the area. The farmers are also instructed not to enter the 115 hectare area. As a result, the pigs can still find enough food and the swine fever will spread less quickly.

African swine fever
Since the beginning of the outbreak 77 dead cadavers have already been found in the Czech Republic. The German Minister of Agriculture warns that the disease will spread further to Germany. An immediate danger is not yet visible at the moment, but that could change soon.

If swine fever spreads to farm pigs, the economic damage could be significant. The disease cannot be vaccinated yet and only killing the infected animals is a solution. Swine fever is not dangerous to humans.
