Despite fewer massacres

Germany sells more pork in the Netherlands

9 August 2017 - Wouter Baan

Meat production in Germany is declining. In the first half of 2017, slaughterhouses produced approximately 85.900 tons less meat, a decrease of 2,1% compared to last year. In terms of sales, Germany sees more demand from the Netherlands.

On balance, German slaughterhouses produced approximately 4 million tons of meat in the period January to June, of which 2,7 million tons was pork. Pork production decreased by 2,2% compared to the same period last year. This is evident from figures from Destatis, the German statistical office.

The declining meat production is a result of fewer slaughters. With 28,6 million slaughters, 2,4% fewer pigs were slaughtered. Less beef and poultry was also produced.

More pork to the Netherlands
In the period from January to May, Germany exported 1.154 million tons of pork. That is a decrease of more than 5% compared to 2016. This decrease is mainly due to less export outside Europe.

Within Europe, exports rose by 2,9% to 830.000 tons. Sales to the Netherlands in particular increased sharply, by 16% to 153.000 tons. This makes the Netherlands the most important buyer of pork. Great Britain (+8% to 68.000 tons) and Poland (+11% to 84.000 tons) also imported more pork from Germany.
