Germans warn of swine fever

11 August 2017 - Kimberly Bakker

In Germany, warning signs against the spread of African swine fever will soon be erected along the A6 in the German state of Baden-Württemberg. That is what the Minister of Agriculture (from Baden-Württemberg) Peter Hauk says.

Precautions are also being taken against the outbreak of African swine fever in other federal states of Germany.

No specific reports

Baltic States and Poland
The infectious disease is currently prevalent in the Baltic States and Poland. Cases have also been reported in the Czech Republic and Romania. Germany has not had any reports so far, but traveler behavior may increase the risk of an outbreak. "Our experts assume that people's travel behavior is indicative of further spread," said Hauk.

Food leftovers along the way
For example, travelers throw away a lot of leftover food at gas stations along the highway. These are then eaten by wild boars. This increases the risk of rapid spread.
