The Producers Organization for Pig Farming (POV) wants an independent investigation into barn fires to be set up. This in response to the recent barn fires in Erichem and Agelo. POV chairman Ingrid Jansen announced this in a press release.
The high number of fires in stables, and specifically in pigsties, is a serious concern for the POV. "This is no longer an incident or coincidence, but here you speak of a pattern," says Jansen.
Meet the demands
The pig farmers meet all fire safety requirements. If not, they are not even insured. Pig farming pays a lot of attention to the prevention of barn fires. In the past, the sector has drawn up an action plan together with the government, insurance companies, the Animal Protection and the security sector. That action plan has not yet led to a reduction in the number of barn fires.
Independent investigation
The POV therefore wants to start an investigation into the cause of the barn fires. That investigation should reveal how the barn fires started and how they can be prevented in the future. "Only then can all the suffering be prevented. Otherwise we will only treat the symptoms," says Jansen.
The POV hopes that several parties will join the call. "That is better than arguing for other measures, while the cause is not even known yet".
