Trend continues

Germany is exporting less and less pigs

16 August 2017 - Wouter Baan

Germany already exported significantly fewer live pigs and piglets in 2016, and exports fell by approximately 1 million animals that year. The downward trend continues this year as well.

In the first half of 2017, Germany sold more than 1,1 million pigs and piglets outside the country's borders. That is a decrease of approximately 1%. The downward trend thus continues, although the decrease is less sharp than in 2016. The downward trend is a logical consequence of the fact that Germany is increasingly counts fewer pigs, while the slaughter capacity remains the same.

Polish appetite for buying weakens slightly

Romania largest customer
According to German statistics, more than 20% of all pigs and piglets go to Romania. Austria and Hungary are also important customers. Exports to these countries did not decline this year, but even recorded a slight increase. Polish slaughterhouses' appetite for German fattening pigs has weakened somewhat. This is because Poland itself has more and more pigs.

Fewer pigs, more meat
In the first 6 months of 2017, the Netherlands imported just under 15.000 German piglets, approximately 3.000 less than last year. The import of German fattening pigs is not very much and got stuck at about 2.000 animals. The Dutch meat import from Germany did increase in the first half of this year.
