Meat from the Netherlands?

Contaminated pork in English supermarket

21 August 2017 - Kimberly Bakker - 6 comments

Contaminated pork has been found in an English supermarket. It has not been disclosed which supermarket it concerns. According to Public Health England, thousands of consumers may be infected with the virus. That will be announced by the organization on Sunday 20 August.

The researchers from Public Health England say that the virus mainly occurs in pork sausages. The virus shows characteristics of the hepatitis E virus, according to the researchers. This virus can cause liver cirrhosis, among other things.

Virus from Germany and the Netherlands

Pork from the Netherlands, among others
The English researchers suspect that the meat comes from Europe, especially from the Netherlands and Germany. According to them, it is less likely that British pigs have also become infected with the virus.

Risk of hepatitis E is small
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has tried to calm concerns about the virus. For example, the organization says that the chance of developing the hepatitis E virus (HEV) is very small.

The consumers who do have the virus often show no symptoms. If there are, it often resembles the flu. HEV can have major consequences for people with a low immune system, such as transplant patients or pregnant women.

Tesco is called
Public Health England and the FSA have declined to name the supermarket in question, but the Sunday Times suspects it may be Tesco. That supermarket has announced in a statement that it will conduct an investigation into the research results.

Kimberly Bakker in the article you clearly state that there is a suspicion that the meat may come from the Netherlands, consumers may be infected and the supermarket will investigate the research results. So there is still very little certain and what does Kimberly have at the top of the article: Meat from the Netherlands. What do you think of that now???

Dear ww,

It is certain that consumers are infected with the virus. So there is no longer any doubt about that. That fact prompted Public Health England to launch an investigation. It is still unclear how many consumers are involved.

In addition, the research shows that the largest part of the pork is imported from the Netherlands. This means that the researchers say that there is a very high chance that contaminated meat will come from the Netherlands (more than in other parts of Europe). Hence that conclusion.

Pork imports higher
Pork imports are also increasing. This is reported by the British Product Board for Pig Farming (AHDB Pork). In the first quarter of 2017, compared to 2016, a significant increase was observed. For example, fresh pork rises by no less than 23% and the import of sausages increases by 8%. Imports of processed meat increased by 19% compared to the first half of 2016.

The problem is, as long as it's cheap, and everyone runs the store to buy this sausage, I don't eat sausage, so no problem with me, go to the butcher, they will sell a healthy sausage.

Why have there been no reports of sick people in the Netherlands?
Why not wait with the finger reference to the Netherlands until the research results actually indicate that it comes from the Netherlands!!
Even though we have supplied 80% of the meat, the contamination cannot come from the 20% that does not come from the Netherlands.

to my knowledge, Germany supplies Tesco supermarkets not the Netherlands
