The number of pig slaughters in the UK has fallen again. This is evident from figures from Defra (Department for Environment Food & Rural Affairs).
The slaughter rate in the United Kingdom fell by 4% in the past month, reaching 828.500 slaughters. The total slaughter figure in the UK (from January to July) therefore amounts to 5,9 million slaughters. That is 6% lower than in the same period last year.
Seventh decline in a row
Slaughter numbers have fallen for the seventh time in a row this month. This reflects the feeling that the market has been too late in recent times. In the first instance, this is a consequence of the fact that it was thought that domestic production would fall. However, that has not happened.
Weight gains again
The weight of the slaughtered pigs has increased again in the past month. In the month of July this amounts to 81,9 kilos. This makes the weight 1,4 kilos higher than in the same period last year.
However, that weight has not been able to ensure that the production of pork has increased. Its production fell by 3% to 70.500 tons in the past month. Total pork production between January and July is 6% lower than in 2016, at 507.400 tons.
