Pork exports from the European Union (EU) also declined in June this year. Especially compared to the same period last year, a significant decrease is visible. This is evident from figures from the Agriculture and Horticulture Devolepment Board (AHDB Pork).
Pork exports fell by 25% in June, or 80.000 tons, to 158.300 tons, compared to last year. Compared to the month of May, a decrease of 6.000 tons has been noted. Despite the higher export prices, due to the higher pig prices, the export value is still lower than last year. A decrease of 21% is visible.
China main reason for decline
Exports to China have declined considerably in recent months. As a result, China's share of the European export market has decreased to 31%.
Exports to Hong Kong also fell sharply. In June 2017, 40% less was exported to that country, compared to June 2016. In contrast, exports to Japan decreased by only 4%.
Also increases visible
Despite the declining export to these 2 buyers, the export to a number of other countries has increased. For example, exports to the Philippines increased by no less than 34%. Exports to South Korea also rose sharply, namely by 17%. The US shows a modest plus of 8%.
Total EU pork exports amounted to 2017 million tonnes in the first half of 1. That is 14% lower than in the first half of 2016. However, higher prices still resulted in an export value of €2,6 billion, an increase of €22 million compared to 2016.
