On Sunday, August 20, it was announced that contaminated pork was being sold in an English supermarket. According to the English researchers, the meat would have been imported from the Netherlands or Germany. However, according to the Central Organization for the Meat Sector (COV), this is not possible.
The COV and the Association for the Dutch Meat Industry (VNV) do not agree with the statement of the English researchers† "On the basis of targeted and effective Hepatitis E control measures and on the basis of previous reports from the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority, we state that the Dutch suppliers supply safe raw materials and products."
Low health risk
The COV also reports that the health risk of Hepatitis E is very high small is. It mainly poses a danger to people with a reduced resistance or people who have had a donor organ. Hepatitis E can cause jaundice or liver failure.
Transmission to consumers can take place via pig livers that have not been properly prepared. Pork and blood have also been examined, but neither of these transmit the virus.
Developments are monitored
The organization will closely monitor developments in English research. "This can be translated into stricter measures to guarantee the safety of Dutch raw materials and products."
