Reports the POV

Pig farming will reduce 830.000 kilos of phosphate

25 August 2017 - Kimberly Bakker

Pig farming is expected to reduce 830.000 kilos of phosphate this year. This is reported by the Producers Organization Pig Farming (POV) on Friday 25 August.

That number is based on the number of registrations from pig farmers for the Voluntary Phosphate Reduction Scheme for Pig Farming 2017† A total of 1.067 companies have registered for this. However, not all of those companies provided the necessary information before July 23.

Unclear if there will be an extra fee

Additional fee?
It is still uncertain whether the pig farmers who reduce more than indicated, receive an extra compensation. This could be done if there is still room in the scheme.

A total of €4 million is available for the voluntary Phosphate Reduction Scheme for Pig Farming. The participants who succeed in producing less phosphate will receive their compensation before 1 April 2018.

Pig farming wants to contribute
With this scheme, pig farming on its own initiative contributes to reducing phosphate production in the Netherlands. The POV set the goal to reduce 1 million kilos of phosphate this year. This is due to the use of low-phosphorus compound feed.
