Shows Meat Price Index

Ham costs no less than 38 euros in Hong Kong

28 August 2017 - Bart-Jan van Zandwijk

In 2014, Hong Kong consumed the most meat. Australia has now taken over that position. However, in the country people still pay the most for 1 kilo of ham. This is evident from the Caterwings Meat Price Index.

Earlier, the same study showed that beef in Switzerland is by far the most expensive. The Meat Price Index from Caterwings is based on the meat prices of the main meat markets of the largest cities in the world. In total, the Meat Price Index consists of data from 52 countries.

The prices have been compared with the minimum wage in the corresponding countries. This then shows how many hours a resident has to work for a piece of meat in their own country.

Hong Kong has the most expensive ham
As mentioned before, in Hong Kong people pay the most for 1 kilo of ham, namely €38,14. The residents of Hong Kong have to work more than 5 hours for that piece of meat, for minimum wage.

In Switzerland you pay €36,34 for 1 kilo of ham. This puts the country just below Hong Kong. In Switzerland, a Swiss person only works 2 hours for that piece of ham. This is followed by South Korea with a price of € 34,29 per kilo. In South Korea people have to work a little longer, namely 3 hours.

The Netherlands scores average
The Dutch pay €20,65 for 1 kilo of pork ham. This means that the Netherlands scores fairly average, compared to the global average. This puts our country in 19th place. Due to the higher minimum wage in the Netherlands, we only have to work 1,5 hours for 1 kilo of ham.

Where do we find the cheap ham?
The cheapest ham is found in Brazil. There you pay 'only' €4,36 for 1 kilo of ham. Ham is also not expensive in Ukraine. Yet the price there is already a lot higher, at €7,40 per kilo. In Ukraine, however, one has to work almost 9 hours for that piece of meat.

In Southeast Asia you have to work 39 hours for 1 kilo

Residents of Southeast Asia have to work the longest. They pay €1 for 21,21 kilo of ham, for which they have to work 39 hours, below minimum wage.

Denmark, Norway and Sweden work the least for 1 kilo of pork ham. The required working time there is not even 1 hour. This shows that the minimum wage in those countries is quite high.

Not all countries are included in this comparison. Countries such as Israel, Turkey and Egypt are not included in the Meat Price Index. That is because in these countries, based on religious beliefs, almost no pork is eaten.

How much meat do we eat on average?
Uit the research of Caterwings has also shown which countries consume the most and the least meat. Australia is at the top, with 112 kilograms of meat per person per year.

At the bottom of the list we find India, the eastern part of Asia. There, only 4,40 kilos of meat is consumed per person per year.
