Over £500 million

British meat exports rise sharply in 2017

29 August 2017 - Bart-Jan van Zandwijk

UK beef and pork exports crossed the £2017m mark in the first half of 500, an 18% increase. This is evident from figures from the HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).

These figures show that there has been a huge increase in exports to countries outside the European Union (EU). Asia in particular offers many new export opportunities for the British.

Rising Exports
Beef exports to countries outside the EU have increased by 45% to almost 8.000 tons. That makes for a total export increase of £23,5 million. Countries such as China and Hong Kong in particular have contributed to this growth. These ensured that beef exports quadrupled.

Growing market
Pork exports to countries outside the European Union increased by almost 4%. This brings the total to 41.000 tons. Of that number, more than half of the export went to China. That equates to an increase of £24 million in the first half of 2017.

The United States is also a growing market for the British. Exports to that country increased by 2,6% to 4.500 tons of pork.

Trade agreement concluded
These figures paint a positive picture of UK meat exports. Countries outside the European Union are an important market for British exports, especially with Brexit on the horizon. Exports to countries outside the EU are expected to increase further.

It was also recently announced that a trade agreement is concluded between the United Kingdom and China. That country will receive £200 million worth of pork. In addition, pork, worth £34 million, is going to the Philippines.
