Pork production in the European Union (EU) increased by 6% in May to 2 million tons. This is evident from the most recent figures from the European Commission.
However, this means that the total pork production, of 9,7 million tons, on an annual basis (January to May) is still 1% lower than last year.
Annual increase in Danish production
The increase in pork production in May was mainly driven by an annual increase in Danish production. This rose by no less than 30%, which means that production has so far been more than 3% higher than last year.
This strong increase can be explained logically, because the reporting in May 2017 was different than in May 2016.
Germany remains below last year's level
In Germany, the largest pork producer in the EU, production increased by 4% in May. However, here too production for January to May remains 2% below last year's level.
In Spain an increase of 7% is visible in May. This means that pork production in that country is 0,5% higher than last year. The Dutch pig sector showed an increase of 13%. As a result, production from January to May is 1% higher than last year. Pork production in the European Union. Source: AHDB Pork.
