The Canadian pig herd is growing. In the month of June Canada had 14,13 million pigs, a growth of 2,1% compared to 1 year earlier. Growth figures can also be observed in neighboring the US.
This is evident from figures from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The growing pig herd is a trend that has been going on for several years. Since June 2012, growth has been more than 11%.
Northwest America plust
The growth figures in Canada are in line with the growth figures in the US, although the percentage increase there is larger. The pig herd in America recorded in the month of June 71,65 million pigs, a growth of 3,4%.
The total pig herd in Northwest America (Canada and the US) increased by 3,2% to 85,78 million pigs. Just like last year, the number of sows on the continent increased by 1% to 7,34 million sows.
Opposite trend
The growth rates in Northwest America are at odds with the trend in Europe. Last December, the European Commission signaled a decline of 1,5% to 147,2 million pigs.
