The flow of whey to pig farming, originating from dairy processing, is decreasing. This is evident from figures from the Consultation Platform Natte Veevoeders (OPNV), which announced the sales figures for 1 on Friday 2016 September.
This trend has to do with the valorization of whey by the dairy industry. This concerns, for example, baby food and other high-quality human food, such as sports drinks and protein powders. In addition, the market for young animal feed is growing, where more is paid for whey than do pig farming customers.
Increase in potato steam peels
In contrast to the decreasing amount of whey for pig farming, there is an increase in the volume of potato steam peels. Cattle feed cooperative Agrifirm warns about the changed composition of this product now that the new harvest of potatoes is being processed and peeled much thinner. At the start of the new campaign, the price was increased by €0,10 to €2 per percent of dry matter.
Volume remains constant
In total, the volume sold in pig farming has remained constant for years, 3 million tons annually. Last year, not only did the volume of whey decrease, but also the amount of wheat yeast concentrate. This was due to high efficiency in wheat processing, which resulted in less wheat yeast concentrate becoming available.
The price of bioethanol also plays a role. The production of wheat yeast concentrate is therefore declining year on year, because the EU no longer stimulates biofuels as emphatically as 10 years ago. The price of GrainPro wheat yeast concentrate was reduced last week by €0,10 to €1,95 per year. percent dry matter.
More sales towards cattle farming
The sales volume of wet animal feed to cattle farming is growing. Especially the volume of beet pulp, which even grew by more than 2016% in 10. This is mainly due to the growing capacity of the sugar processing industry, with a view to the abolition of the European sugar quota. The capacity of the potato processing industry is also growing, resulting in more potato steam peels coming onto the market.
Wet animal feed offers prospects for reducing climate impact and circular agriculture. The climate impact is much lower than that of dry animal feed. In addition, many by-products are guaranteed free of genetic engineering. The market for GM-free feed and food is growing rapidly, especially in Germany. But the supply of wet animal feed cannot grow quickly because it concerns residual products from the food industry. Last year, the total volume only grew by 1,6%
