Where is the number of pig farms falling the fastest?

In 2011, the Netherlands had 6.525 pig farms and in 2016 that number dropped to 4.508 farms. This is a decrease of 35,1%. But in which municipality has the number of pig farms decreased the most? That gives a new top 5 of Boerenbusiness, compiled by CBS, answer to.

Earlier it appeared from a top 5 of Boerenbusiness that the largest pig farms can be found in Venray (Limburg). This also showed that 16,3% of pig farms in the Netherlands have more than 5.000 pigs. But in which municipality did the number of companies decrease?

Who heads the list?
The highest podium is for the municipality of Twenterand (Overijssel). In 2011, there were 31 pig farms in that municipality. That number dropped to 2016 companies in 10, a decrease of 21 companies. The municipality thus shows a decrease of 67,7%. 

In second place comes the municipality of Lopik (Utrecht). In 2011, that municipality still had 28 pig farms. That number dropped to 2016 companies in 11. That is a decrease of 17 companies, or a decrease of 60,7%. 

Third place is for the municipality of Krimpenerwaard (South Holland). That municipality decreased from 34 pig farms in 2011 to 14 farms in 2016. This is a decrease of 20 farms, also a decrease of 58,8%. All 3 are significant decreases, with the number of pig farms more than halved. 

The Misfits
The municipality that falls just outside the boat is the municipality of Wijk bij Duurstede (Utrecht). In 2011, this municipality still had 21 farms with pigs. In 2016, that number dropped to 'just' 10 pig farms. This municipality shows a decrease of 11 companies, or 52,3%.

In fifth and last place of this top 5 is the municipality of Nijkerk (Gelderland). In 2011, this municipality still had 44 pig farms. In the following 5 years, that number has halved. This brings the municipality to 22 farms with pigs in 2016, a decrease of 50%.

Who rose?
The municipality of Marum (Groningen) stands out. This is because it is the only municipality that does not show a decrease, but shows an increase. In 2011, the municipality had 9 pig farms. That number increased to 2016 farms with pigs in 11, an increase of 22,2%.

Which municipality also stands out is the municipality of Ede (Gelderland). This municipality stands out because of the high number of pig farms. In 2011, there were 278 pig farms in that municipality. That number decreased by 5% in the following 33 years to 186 companies in 2016.
