POV calls on Eastern Europeans

12 September 2017 - Kimberly Bakker

The Producers Organization Pig Farming (POV) asks Eastern European employees in the pig sector not to bring food from their home country. This is because of the risk of spreading African swine fever.

The food from Eastern Europe can contain the African swine fever virus. Taking these foods with you can bring the virus to the Netherlands. "As a sector, we are doing everything we can to prevent the African swine fever, which is prevalent in Eastern Europe among pigs and wild boars, from entering the Netherlands," said Ingrid Jansen, chairman of the POV.

Do not bring food and adhere to hygiene rules

Strict hygiene rules
In addition to the call not to bring food from their home country, they are also asked to adhere to strict hygiene rules. "We ask everyone in the pig farming sector to take all possible precautions. The measures are especially important when pig farms are visited," continues Jansen.

Active since 2014
African swine fever has been active in Central and Eastern Europe since 2014. The highly contagious animal disease has been found especially in the Baltic States, Poland, the Czech Republic and Romania.
