Pork production in Spain shows a decline for the first time in years. This is according to figures from the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture.
Pork production in Spain in the first half of 2017, at 2.1 million tons, was 1,8% lower than in the same period in 2016. This means that pork production in the first 6 months of the year has fallen for the first time in years.
Increases were normal
Previously, pork production in Spain increased year after year. For example, production increased by 2016% in the first half of 10,6, compared to the first half of 2015. In 2015 an increase of 8,6% was visible, compared to the same period in 2014. And in that year the country an increase of 3,7% compared to the first 6 months of 2013.
Exports are also showing stagnation
The export of pigs from Spain to countries outside the European Union also showed a decrease in the first half of 2017. This after a huge increase in recent years. However, compared to the other major European exporting countries such as Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands, Spain's stable export market is considered an extraordinary success.
In Germany, pork exports to countries outside the European Union fell by 24% in the first 6 months of 2017. In the Netherlands they fell by 9% and in Denmark by 19%.
