African swine fever hits major producer in Russia

15 September 2017 - Wouter Baan

African swine fever has been diagnosed at a site of Rusagro, Russia's second largest pig producer. The company is located in southeastern Russia, near the border with Ukraine.

About 16.000 pigs are kept on the farm, where the virus was diagnosed. These animals are all culled. The company is located in the Belgarod region, the most important pig region in Russia.

16.000 pigs are culled

In total, Rusagro has 24 locations, which together account for a production of 85.000 tons of pork per year. The affected company contributes about 3.500 tons to this.

Investigation started
Rusagro has launched an investigation into how African swine fever has entered the company. The other locations have not yet been affected.
