POV makes request to cabinet

'Sustainable pig farming must be given more space'

20 September 2017 - Bart-Jan van Zandwijk

The new cabinet must give pig farmers the space to realize sustainable ambitions. This is the opinion of the POV (Producers Organization Pig Farming) in response to the Budget Memorandum.

Sustainability is achieved through the Vitalization Pig Farming Action Plan. Other parties in the chain will also join the Coalition. In addition, the 'Holland Varken' label will be opened. This quality label shows that production is carried out with attention to sustainability, the environment and animal welfare.

Do not enforce sustainability through legislation and regulations

POV calls for actions
The POV advocates a number of actions that will contribute to making the pig sector more sustainable and future-proof. For example, the organization no longer wants national laws and regulations on top of European legislation.

They also do not want sustainability to be enforced through legislation and regulations. In addition, the market must contribute to the welfare and environmental measures in pig farming.

National climate policy must be shaped at European level. This means that the pig farmer is not burdened disproportionately compared to their European colleagues. This creates a level playing field. The further climate approach must take place in close consultation with the sector.

The POV also demands efforts to reduce burdens for agricultural entrepreneurs. Rates for inspections and checks must be reduced to the level of the actual costs. This must be done by means of the extra budget (€25 million) that has been promised by the cabinet.
