The pig market is living between hope and fear this week. Hope is placed on stabilization of the German pig price. The fear is that the pig price will drop by €0,03 to €1,55 per kilo on Wednesday. A positive starting point is the Internet exchange, which gave positive signals on Friday and stagnated at €1,61 per kilo. A narrow majority of the 14 lots offered were traded at this price level. Opinions vary considerably as to how the hares will run on Wednesday afternoon. Pessimists even think that Germany will fall below €1,55.

Heavy pigs often slaughtered

Many pigs are being slaughtered these weeks, according to the experts slaughter figures out. German slaughterhouses are not keen on Tempo pigs. That is why, relatively speaking, there are currently many Tempo pigs in circulation in the Netherlands.

Almost a clean sweep?
The pig plug already emerged in August, when fattening pig farmers speculated on a revival in September. The opposite happened, causing pigs to be abandoned with all violence. Many traders say they have now managed to get rid of the heavy pigs, although the market is still packed.

The 'advantage' of the price dip is that a clean sweep has been achieved, or so the idea persists here and there. The French pork price has not yet calmed down and fell this week by €0,05 to €1,29 per kilo.

Slaughter for cold stores
It is expected that slaughterhouses will maintain a steady pace of slaughter in the coming weeks. The pork price has corrected sharply, making it cheaper to freeze the meat. It is therefore expected that the pig market will slowly move towards unchanged. The ISN in Germany also expects that margins at slaughterhouses have recovered somewhat.

Meat market down

Although meat prices took a big hit this week. The hams and the waist decreased by approximately €0,06 per kilo. The front part had to give up €0,05 and the bellies went back in price by about €0,04.
