The price of pork chunks drops in October by €0,05 to €23,25 per 100 kilos. The quotation has been falling continuously since May, resulting in a price drop of €0,45 per 100 kilos. The decline is in line with the movement that the Compound feed price indicator provides. Until April 2018, a continuation of the downward trend is provisionally expected.

Barley and wheat are leading
Barley and wheat are currently the leading raw materials in the composition of pork pellets. The price of EU feed barley showed a stable price trend in 2017, roughly between €155 and €165 per tonne. Last week (week 44) the price rose above this bandwidth to €166 per tonne. This is also the highest level this year, but about €5 below the 5-year average for that week.

The price of EU feed wheat has been on the rise in recent weeks and amounts to €173 per tonne in week 44, but this is also below the 5-year average. Wheat is in ample supply worldwide with the highest ending stocks in years. This is reflected in the pricing.

The December contract on the Matif closed on Friday 2 November at €163 per tonne. The price has been around this price level for weeks and that is well below the 5-year average.
