Despite Pini .'s attempt

Closed Vion factories are closed and will remain closed

9 November 2017 - Wouter Baan

The Italian meat company Pini is looking for a location in Germany to slaughter pigs. The search focuses on closed slaughter locations of, among others, Vion Germany, but has so far been unsuccessful.

Pini has growth ambitions in Poland, Hungary and Germany. In Germany, the company wants to slaughter about 25.000 pigs a day and is looking for a location for this. In several German federal states, a number of slaughterhouses have closed in recent years and Pini is eyeing those locations.

Pig farmers disappointed in decision

City council is against
Recently, the abattoir tried the old slaughter locations of Vion in Seven (Lower Saxony) reopened. However, this request was rejected by the city council, because it feared social unrest from the influx of foreign workers. A similar attempt at an old Vion factory in Verden (Lower Saxony) also failed.

The rural community in Rotenburg-Verden, including pig farmers, are disappointed with the decision. The reopening of the slaughter locations would be better for market forces on the German pig market. In addition, the transport distance that pigs have to travel to the slaughterhouse would be shortened.

Pini is currently making a similar attempt in Molbergen, which is also in Lower Saxony. 4 years ago Pini also tried to get a foothold in Germany, but even then several attempts failed.
